Historical Pi Day
Pi is the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. This is not equal to the ratio of two integers, so an approximation - 22/7 - is used in many calculations. Pi is essential in architecture and construction and has been frequently used by early astronomers. Pi has been known for about 4,000 years, but it began to be called by the Greek letter in the 1700s.
The origin of the Pi Day
Pi Day began 27 years ago at the San Francisco Exploratorium. Physicist Larry Shaw, who has worked in the electronics group at the museum began ft celebrate March 14, 1988, mainly with the staff of the museum. The tradition has grown to embrace math enthusiasts from all walks of life.
Celebration
This year, the Exploratorium is hosting a one-day celebration at its facility on Pier 15, including Pi Procession, pie dough portions and event to launch pizza.
Pi Day is also the birthday of Albert Einstein.
