The first film was set to cash in on the success of Halloween (1978), [1] and of its own success led Paramount Pictures to buy the license rights, Friday 13. Frank Mancuso, Jr., who produced the film, also developed the TV show Friday 13 after Paramount released Jason Lives. The television series was not connected with the frankness of a character or setting, but was established on the basis of the idea of "bad luck and curses," which symbolized the film series. [2] Although the franchise was owned by Paramount, four films were adapted into novels, with Friday the 13th Part III adapted by two different authors. When the franchise was sold to New Line Cinema, Cunningham returned as producer to oversee two more movies in addition to a crossover film with character Freddy Krueger of the Nightmare on Elm Street series of films. Under New Line Cinema, 13 novels and various comic book series starring Jason were published.
Although the films were not popular with critics on Friday 13 is considered one of the most successful media franchises in America, not only for the success of the films, but also because of the vast merchandising and repeated references the series in popular culture. [3] The popularity of the franchise has generated a fan base that have created their own Friday the 13th films, Jason Voorhees costume replicas shaped and tattooed their bodies with Friday 13 works of art. Jason hockey mask has even become one of the most recognizable in popular culture images. [4]
